FAB Meeting - Key Conclusions for Supporters. 1: The Club’s Sporting Ambition
Supporter representatives from the Fan Advisory Board met the Club to ask direct questions on behalf of West Ham supporters.
Below is a record of the key issues raised, the responses given by the Club, and the conclusions supporters can reasonably draw from the discussion.
1. The Club’s Sporting Ambition
The question we asked
Supporters asked whether the Club’s ambitions had changed since the move to the London Stadium, which was widely associated with the owners, David Sullivan and David Gold’s promised ambitions of Premier League titles and Champions League football.
The answer given by the Club
The Club stated that its objective is regular European qualification and top-10 finishes in the Premier League rather than specifically targeting to win the PL and / or get Champions League qualification. The Club also wanted to target the FA and League Cups.
What we did not receive
A clear explanation of why the messaging around Premier League title winning and Champions League ambition has changed since the stadium move.
What many supporters will hear
The Premier League title win and Champions League ambition that accompanied the move away from Upton Park has quietly been replaced with a more modest target.
Why this matters for supporters
The London Stadium move fundamentally reshaped the Club. Supporters deserved and still deserve clarity about what the long-term sporting ambition actually is.
Conclusion
The Club now frames success as consistent European qualification and top-10 finishes with strong domestic cup finishes, not winning the Premier League and / or being in Champions League contention.
