Freiburg - Information for Travelling Supporters

Football Supporters Europe hosted a meeting to discuss arrangements for our forthcoming matches against Freiburg in the Europa League.

Helen Breit, a member of Supporters Crew Freiburg, gave us some insight about visiting Freiburg.

Before the match - the Altstadt (Old Town) has plenty of bars, taverns and resturants and it’s the ideal location to meet-up. Freiberg is considered a friendly place with the locals as it’s very welcoming to away supporters. The only place you should consider avoiding on matchday is Elsässer Strasse where the local ultras congregate.

The Stadium is known as Europa-Park Stadion, although for UEFA matches has to be referred to by the orginal non-sponsor name of Stadion am Wolfswinkel. Freiberg have only been in their new stadium for 2 seasons - it is owned by the local council and they rent it from them!

However unlike us, they play in purpose designed football stadium.  Inside, it impresses with its compactness, the steep stands and their proximity to the pitch. The visual and emotional center of the atmosphere is the south stand as the only single-tier stand in the new stadium.

They did also keep their old intimate stadium - Dreisamstadion, where their 2nd team play their matches.

The stadium is about 3 miles from the Altstadt and will take you nearly an hour to walk there. With the S-Bahn (Overground), it only takes three minutes from Freiburg Hauptbahnhof to Messe/Universität which is a ten-minute walk away from the stadium. You can also take Tram 4, which takes a bit longer, but if you get off at the tram station Stadion, the walk is shorter. With your match ticket, you can travel by public transport in Freiburg for free before and after the match.

No large backpacks or bags are allowed to be taken into the stadium. Bag drops are located at all entrance points and are signposted (€2 fee), however due to space constraints only a limited number of items can be left. If you want to annoy your fellow supporters, you are allowed to take a drum in with you (fully see-through or see-through on one side) including one pair of drum sticks per drum! Power banks are also permitted.

Food stands and kiosks at the Europa-Park Stadion open two hours before kick-off and there are a variety of food options and bars. Food and drinks can be purchased using cash or card payment at various locations.

For those supporters in the lower tier (standing), it is all open terrace and not rail seating so no allocated spaces.

You should prepare for away fans to be held back after the match although this decision is taken by local police.

After the match, unfortunately there are no bars or restaurants near the stadium.

You will be able to leave the stadium after the game. There will be shuttle buses from the guest bus car park to Karlsplatz (city centre). It is possible that after the departure of the first group of buses, only individuals will be able to leave until the next buses arrive.

It will be nearer midnight by the time supporters return to the City centre with most restaurants closed by then. Some of the bars will still be open and there are several night clubs that are open much later.

Unfortunately, discrimination, sexism and sexual violence continue to be an issue within our society, and in football. SC Freiburg as a club, want to take even more concrete action against discriminatory and unacceptable attacks on matchdays and offer victims our immediate assistance.

On matchdays their fan support team, security staff, the police and German Red Cross (DRK) are available to provide assistance to those in need. SC Freiburg’s fan support team is on hand to respond to urgent cases on matchdays.

Additionally, SC Freiburg work together with “Frauenhorizonte” (Women's Horizons), a specialised counselling centre against sexual violence. Any fan who experiences sexual violence during a matchday can contact the round-the-clock help line provided by Frauenhorizonte, including evenings, weekends and holidays, by calling the following number: +49 761 285 85 85. https://www.frauenhorizonte.de/en
